Winter enthusiasts will be pleased to learn that with snow predicted for most days this week, chances are good that the 159 mile trail system known as the Allegheny Snowmobile Loop (ASL) will open on Sunday, December 20.
Bradford District Ranger Tony Scardina has said, “... the entire length of the ASL will be open when the season officially begins on December 20th,” according to the Great Outdoors Visitors Bureau website. The extensive trail system runs through Warren County, Forest County, Elk County, and McKean County.
Riders should be aware that trail conditions can vary, depending on snowfall and grooming. Before venturing out it is recommended that residents and visitors call either the Allegheny National Forest Supervisor’s Office at (814) 723-5150 or the Marienville Ranger District at (814) 927-6628.
According to the National Weather Service, new snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches is possible as soon as tomorrow. In addition, there is a 70 percent chance of snow Wednesday night and a 30 percent chance of snow on Friday. On Sunday, the day the snowmobile trails open, there is a 50 percent chance of snow. Whether or not the trails are officially declared open is dependent on the actual accumulation of snowfall.Check current trail conditions and snow cover here.
