The choice of a vice presidential running mate for John McCain was made at the last minute, 24 hours before it was announced to the public on the Friday before the Republican National Convention.
Republican presidential candidate John McCain had met Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin only once--in February of 2008--before interviewing her for the job of vice president at his home in Arizona one day before he announced his decision. They met at a National Governors Association meeting in Washington. See Wall Street Journal's report of the account given by Jill Hazelbaker, a spokeswoman for John McCain.
The New York Times also reported today that McCain chose his running mate after a single face-to-face interview the morning before he made the announcement of his decision:
"He had his first face-to-face interview with her on Thursday and offered her the job moments later. Advisers to Mr. Pawlenty and another of the finalists on Mr. McCain’s list described an intensive vetting process for those candidates that lasted one to two months."
The article by Elizabeth Bumiller details a shortened "vetting" process used to select the Republican nominee for Vice President.
