No-Name Greenhouse offers surprising flowers at surprising prices
Modesty forbids me from telling you who owns this greenhouse on a dirt road outside of Sugar Grove.
Not
my modesty, but that of the owners, an Amish family on Stillwater Road
who have been providing reasonably priced potted flowers of
unreasonable quality for years. Theirs is a classic word-of-mouth
enterprise and if you have relied on the usual media sources to find
out about it, you are out of luck. Fortunately, the local elders have
approved this public service article.
I never would have found
the greenhouse during my wanderings through the area if it weren't for
a simple sign that reads "greenhouse" on the right hand side of the
road on Route 957 just outside of Sugar Grove as you head toward
Columbus and Corry.
But you have to look carefully. It is
located below another sign for Yoder Woodworking. A few miles up a dirt
road and you know you have arrived because there is a greenhouse on the
left hand side of Stillwater Road. There's no sign for the business.
When you walk in you'll talk to the lady who actually grew the
plants--from cuttings supplied by a next door neighbor. With one
notable exception, all the plants here are 100% local produce. The
exception is the owner's favorite flower, Martha Washington geraniums,
seen below, which she raises from seedlings.
While you are here, don't miss the blueberry orchard, the tomato plants, and the peppers.
How do they grow such healthy and beautiful plants? It's a secret you can only get by visiting. The greenhouse without a name is closed on Sundays and open during daylight hours the rest of the week.
